Story update: After yesterday’s big headlines about Michael Jackson and Robbie Burns (a bizarre music news moment) it should come as no surprise that there has been reaction in scholarly Burns circles to the idea of MJ performing the poet’s words, set to what its composer, David Gest, described as “show tunes.” For example, BBC News quotes Southern Scottish Counties Burns Association president David Baird as saying: “I was quite incredulous at the thought that Michael Jackson on the eve of h

This might shock you, but I actually enjoyed tonight. Bill Clinton helped get things going with a typically strong speech, and then John Kerry actually, really, and completely kicked ass. He ripped into McCain, and was very clear in his attacks. Either he was a lot better as a speaker tonight than he was during the campaign four years ago, or we are not giving him credit for being a strong candidate. (The latter is actually quite possible, given that Kerry outperformed the national Democratic Ho

If you’re anything like me, one of your favorite reasons to read is for the story. Not for the character development and interaction. Not because of the descriptive, emotive powers of the writer. Not because of deep, literary meaning hidden beneath layers of metaphor. (Even though those are all good things.) No … it’s because you want to know what happens next? Or, um, is it just me? - BTT It’s hard to say what my favourite reasons are to read. It is true that plot and story factor into ove

Each year when the Decatur Book Festival rolls around I study the schedule and carefully plot out a full weekend of bookish fun. The ironclad schedule falls apart within moments of arrival as I’m pulled in unexpected directions. I always forget to allow adequate time for booth visiting and Brick Store Pub happenings. That said, here’s this year’s pie-in-the-sky game plan: Saturday 9:30 Madeline Parade - This one is non-negotiable. My four year old daughter has firm plans to meet up with

By Cliff Kincaid Jon Meacham writes in Newsweek that Obama’s mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, was “a strong voice for racial justice” and political activist whose “writings on civil-rights and labor issues” had “prompted a McCarthyite denunciation by the House Un-American Activities Committee.” Meacham is suggesting that Davis was the target of false allegations that he was a communist. While he agrees that Davis was one of Obama’s mentors, Meacham’s handling of the communism angle is about as d

Poetry isn’t a staple here at the Trout Underground, and if my high school English teacher was right, it’s because I lack the genes needed to correctly interpret it. Still, when I posted (long ago) about David Fraser’s Killing Trout and Other Love Poems, I was interested enough to dip my beautifully manicured manscaped toe back in poetry’s metaphor-rich waters. Fraser’s a fly fisherman and outdoorsman, and not surprisingly, the outdoors occupy a high profile in most of his poems. Interestin

By: Ann Coulter Vice presidential candidate Joe Biden’s speech at the Democratic National Convention was great. As I write, he hasn’t given it yet, but these are my favorite parts: “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a
